2.20 Safe to install
A new WiFi Direct solution has been added to PdaNet, allowing for easy connection between computers or tablets via USB tether. This update also includes the legacy WiFi Hotspot feature, which remains available in FoxFi. If your phone still supports the FoxFi feature, it is recommended as the best option for sharing your phone's internet connection without restrictions on the devices you can connect.
(New) WiFi Direct Hotspot
The new WiFi Direct feature in PdaNet 5 enables WiFi connection with computers or tablets. However, unlike the previous WiFi Hotspot feature, this requires either installing PdaNet on the connecting devices or configuring proxy settings. Use this feature if you are no longer able to use WiFi Hotspot or if your usage is being limited despite having an unlimited data plan.
(Legacy) WiFi Hotspot
Starting from Android 7.0 (Nougat) and onwards, the old WiFi Hotspot mode is no longer supported, even for Verizon phones. For alternative solutions, please refer to PdaNet.
Due to system updates and restrictions, the old WiFi mode is only compatible with a limited number of devices. As of November 2016, in general:
- Android 7.0 (Nougat) or later does not support WiFi mode for Verizon phones.
- Verizon Samsung phones (S3/4/5/6/7/Edge, Note 2/3/4/5 etc.), Verizon LG phones (V10, G2/3/4/5 etc.), and Verizon Sony phones (Z2/Z3) are supported up to Android 6.0/6.1.
- Verizon HTC phones (M7/8) only work on Android 4.1 ~ 4.4.
- Verizon Motorola phones only work on Android 4.3 or below.
- AT&T Samsung phones only work on Android 4.2 or below.
- Other carriers/phones will only work if they have Android 4.0 or below.
- Straight Talk phones using Verizon and compatible with the above devices will work.
- For all other phones, USB mode or Bluetooth mode should be used instead.
To bypass WiFi mode restrictions, FoxFi may prompt you to install a certificate on your phone. This will enable the Android system to add screen lock security and display a notification message. For more information and steps to remove the screen lock, please visit http://pdanet.co/wifi. If you encounter a message asking for a "password for credential storage," this is a bug in the Android system. Refer to the steps provided at http://pdanet.co/wifi to resolve this issue.
The free edition of PdaNet will turn off after reaching its usage limit, but it can be turned back on. Otherwise, it functions the same as the full version.
